About

Ruth Pastine’s minimalist paintings address phenomena of color perception. In seamless gradients, often composed with nuanced mixtures of complementary hues, the surfaces of her works appear to pulse toward their edges. The luminous color is built up with countless brushstrokes, each painting taking months to complete. Color relativity— the perception of influence between adjacent colors—has remained a reoccurring subject in Pastine’s work over the course of her artistic trajectory.

Pastine’s paintings have been exhibited widely in the United States, Europe and Japan, and are included in many public and corporate collections such as: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, Los Angeles and the Lancaster Museum of Art and History in California, among many others.
