MERETE RASMUSSEN: CONTINUUM
Scott Richards Contemporary Art is delighted to announce CONTINUUM, the first San Francisco exhibition of renowned contemporary sculptor Merete Rasmussen. This highly anticipated showcase will feature Rasmussen’s intriguing, multi-faceted ceramic sculptures, celebrated for their bold colors, seamless curves, and dynamic sense of movement.
The public is invited to meet the artist at the opening reception on Saturday, April 26, from 4 – 6 pm. The exhibition will continue through May 31st.
Merete Rasmussen is a Danish-born, UK-based artist internationally renowned for her fluid, ceramic sculptures. Her style is characterized by organic abstract forms that create a sense of movement and continuity, often appearing as flowing ribbons, continuous loops or interwoven shapes. Using vibrant monochromatic colors—deep blues, bright yellows, and rich reds—Rasmussen's elegant works emphasize the interplay of form and space, light and shadow.
On view through at Scott Richards Contemporary Art through May 31st, CONTINUUM showcases both free standing and wall mounted examples of the artist's most recent explorations. Inspired by organic and mathematical structures, these works evoke natural and architectural elements while maintaining a strong sculptural presence. Merete employs the slip looping process, a techinque that involves the careful hand-building of clay using slip—a liquid clay mixture—carefully shaped into ribbons to create sturdy yet delicate structures. She meticulously constructs her sculptures by gradually shaping and refining the curves, ensuring continuous, unbroken surfaces that enhance the sense of movement. The method requires exceptional skill and patience, as the clay must be kept at the right moisture level to maintain its fluidity while supporting the overall structure. Once shaped, the pieces are carefully dried and fired, with vibrant monochrome glazes applied to accentuate the smooth, undulating forms.
Merete Rasmussen describes the elegant balance between precision and spontaneity prevalent in her work, stating:
“I enjoy the challenges posed by working in clay and building complex structures. Despite their apparent fragility and complicated contours, my sculptures confidently hold their own shape.”
Rasmussen's sculptures have been exhibited internationally and are a part of prestigious collections such as: Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, the National Museum of Scotland in the United Kingdom, and MAD Museum of Arts and Design, New York. Through her exploration of form, color, and spatial relationships, Rasmussen continues to push the boundaries of contemporary ceramic sculpture, bridging the gap between craft and fine art.
