Defying the Rules of Linear Perspective
A New Venice CollagePatrick HughesPatriCanaletto, 2024Oil and collage on board AP 1/230.5 x 68 x 11 inchesPatrick Hughes’ deep admiration for the city of Venice is evident in many of his works, where its waterways, bridges, and enchanting architecture become central themes. The city's unique spatial layout, which has inspired artists for centuries, specifically resonates with Hughes' interest in perspective manipulation.
One of his key influences is the 18th-century Venetian artist Canaletto, who was a master of capturing Venice’s grandeur through precise use of linear perspective in his detailed cityscapes. Canaletto’s ability to depict architectural depth and proportion with mathematical precision left a lasting impact on Hughes, whose own reverspective works echo this fascination with space and perspective. In Hughes’ interpretations, Venice’s iconic scenes become ever-shifting, illusionary environments, blending his love for the city with his passion for defying the rules of visual perception.
